THE GIRAY’S DEATH

(THE LEGEND FROM ESKI KYRYM CITY)

Gold and woman – they are two deaths that waiting for a man, when deavil – shaitan interferes in the action. If the soul is dry and the body became flabby – then it would be gold. If the blood still boils, and the fire is in the eyes, then it would be the woman. Shaitan knows how to please anyone, so then to laugh better.

There wasn’t smarter khan in the world than mighty Arslan Giray, from Solhat city, who seemed to have everything to be happy. He had one hundred wives and three hundred concubines, a palace with marble and porphyry decorations, gardens and coffee houses, countless herds of horses and flocks of sheep. What would else he ask for? It seemed so.

However, someone was attending Giray at night disturbing his mind: - You have everything, but not enough gold. – Where could I find a lot of gold? – Giray asked himself.  He couldn’t sleep through the night.

One day, when beks – the lords, came to him, he ordered them to collect the all wise men from the Khanate. The beks didn’t not know what to do. Everyone tried to bring his friend, even not wise: - I would like to have the means - Khan announced - to make a gold out of stone.

Then, the beks and wise men thought, "Probably khan lost his mind. If it were possible to do, people would create it for the long time before." However, they said, "The will of the Khan is sacred. Give us time. "A week later they asked, "If you can, wait." Two weeks later, when they tried to ask for a new term, Khan drove them out. Khan was a smart person. – I’d go to look the wise man by myself, - he decided.

The beks dissuaded him: "There was no need to Khan to go to the people. Nobody knew, what could happen. Khan could hear those things, that his noble ear shouldn’t hear." – However, he tried to go.

He dressed as dervish and went away. Beks told the truth. Giray heard many offensive words about himself and beks, wandering through the bazaars and coffee houses of Solhat city. People talked about his latest venture: - Our Khan became mad. He wanted to make gold out of stone.

The others added: - Let him call our Kamil dzhindzhi – the spiritualist. Maybe something would happen. - Where could Kamil dzhindzhi live?

So, Khan went to the sorcerer. He told him what he wanted. Dzhindzhi was silent for some time. - Well, what? - It would be difficult ... If you do all that I say, something would turn out. - I'll do.

The Khan has sworn a great oath: - Yes, if I don’t do so, let all three livers would weak. And he repeated: - Uch talak bosh olsun! – Let all the three livers be empty.

Then they got into a cart and drove off. They drove eight days. The ninth day, they approached to Kerch Mount. - Now, let's go.

-

They walked up the hill until it began to grow the shadow. They stopped and Dzhindzhi began to chant. The ninth word opened the stone and rolled into the depths, and two snakes behind him, hissing, went into the underground passage. The snakes’ scales were glowing in the moonlight. The Khan saw naked people on the walls of cave, who were dancing the goat dance. – It is close now. Repeat after me: Hel-Hala-Hal.

As soon as Khan repeated these words, he fell in front of an iron gate and went into another world. The dungeon walls were spread and the silver ceiling started to sparkle with the diamonds. Khan stood on a pile of golden pieces, and clouds of them rushed near. The golden stone went up from the land and ruby lights lit everywhere. He saw the girl among them, who was lying on a lotus leaf. The black dog began to howl. Dzhindzhi shuddered. – Do not look at her.

However, Khan was fascinated and watched. The diamonds faded for him; rough copper seem gold, void all the treasures of the world. Giray did not hear her voice, but his heart was singing, a delicate song with the fragrance of blossoming grapes.

- Hurry up, take the branch at her feet - rushed to him Dzhindzhi, - and all the wealth of the world would be in your hands!

The princess rose from the bed. - Arslan Giray wouldn’t spoil his memory by kidnapping the girl’s spell. He was brave to come, he came and loved me. He’d stay with me.

The princess’s lips pulled toward the Khan’s mouth.

The air hesitated. The golden sparks flew and carried out Dzhindzhi from the bowels of Kerch mountain and transferred him to Solhat’s Bazaar. People surrounded him.
- Did you hear? Our Khan was missing, - people said. – It’s too pity for Arslan Giray.

But Dzhindzhi silently shook his head. – Don’t regret about Giray. He found more than sought.
